This original mosaic, dating back 1500 years to Justinian's time, depicts Emperor Constantine (right) presenting a model of Constantinople (symbolized by city walls) and Emperor Justinian (left) presenting a model of Hagia Sophia to Mary and Christ. The mosaic is found inside the Vestibule of Guards, so named for the imperial guards who waited here while the Emperor attended services. |
