Süleyman's Mosque was designed by Mimar Sinan, Turkey's greatest architect and a contemporary of Leonardo da Vinci and Michelangelo. Conscripted into the elite Janissary service, he designed and built over 477 monuments in his life, including 20 royal mosques in Istanbul alone. Most of his buildings are still standing today, more than 500 years later.
