Zincirli Han inside the Grand Bazaar. Hans were originally urban inns to accomodate tradesmen and travelers. Eventually, they developed into specialized workshops for a particular trade (this one was for jewelry). Typically a han encircled a central courtyard, with first floor for stable and storage, and second floor for guestrooms (now converted to workshops). |
