| Rabat is the present-day capital of Morocco, a legacy of its role as the administrative center under French rule. Next to the Mediterranean coast, it was first a Phoenician city, then a Roman city (Sala Colonia), and later the imperial capital of the Almohads. In the 17th century, Philip II of Spain expelled Muslim refugees from Andalucia to Rabat, and the city played host to a large sea piracy operation for 40 years. |
