Marrakech was founded in 1062 by the Almoravids (a desert Berber tribe). At the intersection of farms, pastoral plains, and mountains, it grew over the next 200 years to become a vibrant trading center and capital of Berber dynasties. The city's fortunes rose and fell with the changing dynasties - decline under the Merenids (Fes), a golden period under the Saadians in 16-17th century, decline under the Alaouites, and renaissance under Moulay Hassan's reign in the late 19th century. |
