Fes is the original capital of the Muslim kingdom of Morocco, founded in 799 by Idriss II, a descendant of the prophet Mohammed, near the old Roman capital of Volubilis. Despite lasting only a century, the Idrissid kingdom is still core to the Moroccan national identity today. Over the centuries, it has been ruled and neglected by the Almoravids, the Almohads, the Merenids, the Saadians, the Alaouites, and the French. |
